Chapter Twenty

Ethan stood under the pulsating stream of hot water for an extra ten minutes to get mentally organized. Steam built as he ticked off a to-do list for Alex’s case: discovery documents, videos, computer backup, calendar, contacts, and fingerprints. He inhaled a deep, cleansing breath as he dealt with the underlying meaning of taking on this job. Alex’s future, and by extension Tyler’s, hung in the balance. The pressure was on to get this one right and fast.

Dried off and standing in front of the hotel room closet clad only in knit gray boxer briefs, he inventoried his limited selection of clothing. Maybe it was all in his head, but the borderline flirtatious interaction he’d had with Jesse made him wish he’d put more thought into wardrobe before leaving California. It had been years, decades really, since he’d concerned himself with such things, but his two-each option of long-sleeve shirts, casual golf shirts, neutral slacks, suit jackets, jeans, and athletic wear now seemed inadequate in terms of presentation. Slacks? Too dressy. Though they’d be inside, shorts seemed too casual. Jeans were the perfect compromise, especially once he’d topped them off with a pressed, gray, two-toned golf shirt. One can never go wrong with golf attire. Besides, she golfs.

He returned to the bathroom to double-check his hair, an uncharacteristically vain effort. “Geez, I feel like a teenager.” He glanced down at the bottle of aftershave cologne he’d packed and quietly asked himself, “Should I?”

“Focus, Falling. This isn’t a real date.” Nevertheless, he applied a single splash to be on the safe side.

Ethan set up his laptop and pulled out the files on Alex’s case from his satchel. As he spread out the collection of documents and pictures on the couch and coffee table, he realized this method wasn’t going to suit his needs. Hands on his hips, he surveyed the mess. “I need a murder board.”

He picked up the room phone and called the front desk. “Yeah, hey. I’m Ethan Falling, a guest of Alex Castle.”

“Yes, Mr. Falling. We have instructions to get you anything you need twenty-four-seven.”

“Great. I have an odd request. Do you have one of those portable magnetic whiteboards? The kind on wheels?”

“I believe we have some in our conference rooms. Shall I have one brought up to your suite?”

“Please. And can you bring up a bunch of those little magnets, a roll of Scotch tape, and a couple of dry-erase markers in a variety of colors?”

“Of course, Mr. Falling. I’ll send up everything immediately.”

Within fifteen minutes, two hotel staff members arrived to deliver the requested items.

“Come on in.” Ethan held the door open and gestured toward the wall opposite the couches. “Put the board in front of the fireplace. I don’t plan on using it.”

“That’s a shame. I love a warm fire.” Jesse extended an arm to stop the door from closing before following the hotel clerks inside.

She was early and didn’t give Ethan a chance to be a gentleman. He darted toward the door to hold it open for her.
